A Modern Quilt for The New Puppy

I have not been able to write here for a couple of weeks. I have a big project going on. And I am not talking about this quilt!

  

I am talking about the owner of the quilt!

She is my new beagle puppy Stella! As you can see from the pictures, see appreciates my hard work for the quilt.

I made the quilt from scraps that I found in the closet. I used to make a lot of quilts many years ago. Then I stopped. The reason was the lack of time to make really artistic detailed hand embroidered quilts and the lack of inspiration to make traditional ones. But now I have found a new trend: modern quilting! I am so excited!

Quilting with Pen and Paper

Have you ever heard of swapping deco squares? They are 4 by 4 inches squares that you decorate and send to your partner. This was my first. The given theme was "Playing with inks" and as I love inks I just had to participate.

The square shape made me think about quilting. I used to be a passionate quilter some years ago. I still like it but do not dedicate that much time for it anymore. But I love sewing with my pen, adding small stitches and lines, combining paper like fabric pieces.

Here's a sample of my quilting on fabric. Just a small potholder but I even named it. It's called "Childhood" and it really reminds me of my Karelian origin and my childhood home in the 70s. This one was given to my sister and she luckily liked it too!

Sarah Kay and Her Relatives

I was a child in the 70s and teenager in the 80s. Sarah Kay was very popular that time. Now, when her drawings are making a come back, I find them so appealing, mostly because of the nostalgia connected to them. I could not resist buying a couple of Sarah Kay stamps in the summer and I still love to use them.

I also think there's a lot of patchwork style in Sarah Kay. I have been quilting for tens of years and find all those calico fabrics so sweet and pretty.

Here's a photo of one of the little quilts I made over 10 years ago. I find Sunbonnet Sue very similar to Sarah Kay characters.

Another character of the 70s is Holly Hobbie. She has been modernized nowadays but the original Holly Hobbie is definitely a cousin to Sunbonnet Sue and Sarah Kay's characters. Very cute, wearing cotton dresses and big hats.
